Title: Bill Cunningham to be Honored with Renamed New York City Corner

Text: Update 7/5/16: New York City will officially pay tribute to Bill Cunningham by renaming the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street — home to the Louis Vuitton flagship store — as “Bill Cunningham Corner.” The dedication ceremony is scheduled for July 6. “Bill Cunningham transformed our sidewalks into catwalks and turned New Yorkers into fashion icons,” stated mayor Bill de Blasio. “His vibrant photographs were instrumental in establishing New York as the fashion capital of the world.” Following Bill Cunningham’s passing over the weekend, there has been an overwhelming expression of admiration for the New York Times’ renowned social and street photographer. A petition has been initiated on Change.org to rename the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street “Bill Cunningham’s Corner.”

“For many years, the remarkable photographer Bill Cunningham was a fixture at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street,” states the petition, which is currently just 54 signatures short of its goal. “In 2009, Bill Cunningham was honored as a ‘New York Living Landmark.’ Now, it is imperative for the City and the Landmarks Commission to make this recognition permanent!”
