For the second time and likely continuing in the future, Kenzo presented their menswear and womenswear collections simultaneously. This resulted in an extensive show featuring 88 looks, accompanied by snippets of Obama’s climate change speeches. Given that Carol Lim and Humberto Leon, New Yorkers and Kenzo’s creative directors since 2011, were organizing the event, it was only natural that the recent controversial presidential election was on their minds. Trump’s inauguration had taken place just the day before the show, and all mentions of climate change were promptly removed from the official White House website. Despite this, they remained resolute, drawing inspiration from the obscure subculture of arctic surfers and, as stated in the show notes, “celebrating the women and men who experience one of the rawest environments.” Models of both genders were decked out in technical winter snowsuits and shoes designed for the harshest conditions. Bright colors were used to ensure visibility in snowy landscapes, and heavy layers were employed to combat windchill. The knitwear stood out, featuring Aaran cable knits dyed in multicolored gradients to mimic the aurora borealis. The entire show was held in a massive warehouse, with seating arranged in a square and an open backstage area in the center. It was entertaining to watch the models get energized and counted in, though the irony of Obama’s edited climate change speeches juxtaposed with the energy-intensive lighting and clouds of hairspray used before the models stepped out was hard to ignore.
